Psalm 119:105 NKJV — NUN Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
Guidance is a pivotal component of life. It is the fundamental principle for helping people navigate the course of life. Guidance is paramount and essential in shaping how a person lives. The concept itself is rooted in guiding individuals to live wisely, make well-informed decisions, avoid unnecessary pitfalls, and model a lifestyle of spiritual, emotional, moral, and ethical behavior that is practically aligned with wisdom. Guidance is foundational for giving direction, clarifying purpose, helping people walk uprightly, promoting growth and maturity, fostering development, imparting knowledge, granting protection, and drawing people closer to God. Psalm 119 is the longest composition of biblical passages in the Bible. Psalm 119 has an acrostic structure organized by the Hebrew alphabet. At Psalm 119:105, which marks the start of a new section of the acrostic poem, you will find the fourteenth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which symbolizes faithfulness, meekness, and the desired activity in one’s lifestyle. Within its structural framework, as an acrostic poem, is recorded insight regarding God’s law, including abstaining from iniquity, adhering to God’s commands, praising God, walking in purity, meditating on God’s precepts, delighting in God’s statutes, learning about God’s ways, gaining wisdom, turning one’s eyes away from worthless things, following God’s guidance, modeling a life that honors and glorifies God, and many other biblical and theological facets. Psalm 119:105 discloses the illuminating means of God’s Word, which provides guidance along the path of life. In this written discourse, there are three realities surrounding divine guidance for your life. The components to thoroughly examine relate to the source of divine guidance, the purposeful means of divine guidance, and the outcome of divine guidance.
The Source of Divine Guidance
Psalm 119:105 proclaims that God’s Word is the source of guidance for life.
The word of the Lord is the revelatory means by which God has chosen to speak to humanity, particularly His followers, to give counsel and insight for life.
Scripture sets forth the blueprint and road map to help steer followers of God in the right direction. God has provided the Bible as a compass to be instrumental in defining a person’s course of action. The law of God is a guidebook that provides oversight to aid us throughout our human experience. It is a divine manual for life, filled with advice, principles, direction, values, doctrine, fundamentals, standards, and morals that shape one’s character and conduct. The Bible informs us about what we should cleave to and what we should abstain from. God’s Word is a reliable, trustworthy, inerrant, and infallible source that sustains and preserves life. It is filled with the knowledge of God to guide you on your journey. The counsel of the Lord, as written in His Word, transforms the mind to be properly governed in life for those who follow its guidance.
Life is a pilgrimage for every traveler. Travelers usually do not travel without a source to guide them. Psalm 19 describes the nature of God’s Word as a spiritual guide for travelers and the effects His Word has on those who rely on it. Psalm 19:7-11 (NKJV) acknowledges “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.” God’s Word effectively accomplishes its purpose in the lives of those who willingly obey its authority. The Bible is rewarding and profitable for those who operate under its influence. The reward of grace and the outworking of God’s plan for your life will become evident as you follow His divine manual.
It is vital to understand that there will be other sources that attempt to influence your life.
There will be mediums that seek to serve as a rule of governance for your life. Other things will present themselves as truth that is relevant for you to live by. Sources in the form of people, ideologies, concepts, movements, and social and cultural constructs will try to grip your minds as a primary source of guidance for life.
However, hold firm to God’s Word.
Digest God’s Word daily. Study God’s Word daily. Meditate regularly on God’s Word and allow it to lead you.
Constant contact with the Word of God will suppress competing thoughts that seek to overrule the Bible as the divine rule of thumb. The Bible is the absolute source of truth to direct our path. The Word of God stabilizes the soul that trusts in its provision for direction and instruction on the path of life. So, delight in the law of God, and you will find contentment throughout your life. Psalm 1:1-2 (NKJV) cites “Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.” Psalm 112:1 (NKJV) records, “Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, Who delights greatly in His commandments.” There is blessedness in your life being ordered by the Word of God. His Word will not lead you astray, and you will reap the benefits of following its guidance. May your life be firmly held together by the power of God, aligned with the navigational system of His Word.
The Purposeful Means of Divine Guidance
Psalm 119 states that God’s Word is a lamp for our feet. The word “feet” is characterized by the concepts of movement, motion, function, placement, and the activity of life. In order to guarantee that a person is in the right placement in life, one must observe God’s Word to analyze their movement, whether or not their feet have tread the right course. The Word projects light as a lamp to point our feet in the right proximity and vicinity. The Bible is our spiritual guide to help us keep in step with God’s will. Charles Spurgeon wrote, “We are walkers through the city of this world, and we are often called to go out into its darkness; let us never venture there without the light-giving word, lest we slip with our feet. Each man should use the word of God personally, practically, and habitually, that he may see his way and see what lies in it. When darkness settles down upon all around me, the word of the Lord, like a flaming torch, reveals my way.” 1 The impartation of Scripture should be applied to every area of life. It is the source that enables us to perceive things distinctively and approach those things in light of God’s light.
The premise of God’s way is revealed through the illuminating nature of His Word.
Following the framework of God’s Word gives us visibility into how our lives are ordered. Psalm 37:23 (NKJV) implies, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way.” Walking after God’s order means walking in the purposeful means He has established. The phraseology of ordered steps reveals that your feet are purposefully heading in the direction God has ordained and orchestrated. This entails having our day-to-day decisions, mental capacity, conduct, and actions guided by the Lord. The world is filled with darkness that seeks to consume every individual. But God has provided visible and visionary means for us to see as we travel throughout our lifetime. James Montgomery Boice wrote: “This fourteenth stanza speaks of the clarity of the word of God, but the Bible is not only clear itself; it is clarifying, which means that we see other things clearly by its light.” 2 God’s Word empowers those who are regulated by the Word to make proper judgments and decisions in light of the Word when faced with subject matters, ideas, views, and worldviews that are antithetical to His Word.
The law of God provides what H.B. Charles, Jr. calls “spiritual landmarks to ensure that you are going in the right direction” against ideas that conflict with God’s pattern for life. 2
Philippians 4:8 (NKJV) assures that biblical doctrine and truth help one gravitate toward the ultimate standard in life, which is centered on the Word. Paul wrote, “whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Divine truth will direct your feet toward what is suitable, fitting, and appropriate in the eyes of God. Constant exposure to the lamp of God will keep your way pure when practical obedience is applied to your walk. Psalm 119:9 (NKJV) is penned this way: “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.”
God’s Word is a portable light that guides a person’s footsteps.
Proverbs 6:23 (NKJV) acknowledges “For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.” God has provided the lamp of truth and wisdom to illuminate your path. May the plea of every Christian be the words from Psalm 43:3 (NKJV) — “Oh, send out Your light and Your truth! Let them lead me.” God manages the affairs of our steps to their intended purpose and designation when His guidance is sought. May our footsteps stride in the light of God’s glorious revelation. Thoroughly hold God’s Word in your hand and hide God’s Word in your heart so that you walk purposefully in His plan.
The Outcome of Divine Guidance
The writer of the psalm concludes in Psalm 119:105 that God’s Word is not only a lamp for our feet but also a light for our path. The progression of the text reveals that God’s Word is the source of illumination that lights His followers’ passageway.
The path of God’s children is marked by light.
Our path is luminous and radiant because it is connected to the origin of light, God. 1 John 1:5 (NKJV) declares that “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” John MacArthur affirmed “In Scripture, light and darkness are very familiar symbols. Intellectually, “light” refers to biblical truth while “darkness” refers to error or falsehood (cf. Ps. 119:105; Prov. 6:23; John 1:4; 8:12). Morally, “light” refers to holiness or purity while “darkness” refers to sin or wrongdoing (Rom. 13:11–14; 1 Thess. 5:4–7). John forcefully affirms that God is absolutely perfect and nothing exists in God’s character that impinges upon His truth and holiness.” 3 Therefore, those who follow the origin of light have a well-lit passage. God the Son, Jesus, spoke these words in John 8:12 (NKJV) — saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” A person’s positional relationship with God enables them to abide in the light and then to walk in the light. The songwriter penned these words:
“Walk in the light
Beautiful light
Come where the dewdrops of mercy shine bright
Shine all around us by day and by night
Jesus is the light of the world.” 4
The person who abides in God abides in His light. His light blazes the trail for our path, guiding the way. The NIV Grace and Truth Study Bible mentions that “His Word is a lamp that shows us the best path forward.” 5 Life is often filled with uncertainties, but when you walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, He is with you on the path, accompanying you. The light helps establish and light every step. His light helps prevent countless stumbles. His light gives clarity and purpose for the journey. When you are afflicted, troubled, and distressed at times in your life, the Word of God will revitalize you on your quest in life. Psalm 119:107 (NKJV) records, “I am afflicted very much; Revive me, O LORD, according to Your word.” You will encounter bumps in the road that will cause discouragement, dishearten you, and weaken you.
But as you cleave to God’s Word, it will restore, rejuvenate, strengthen, and renew you to walk in the light of Scripture.
The lyrical composer wrote these words:
“When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.” 6
Trust in God’s Word. Apply God’s Word. Benefit from its source of light and guidance. Make sure that you travel the landscape of life in the proper path. Proverbs 4:14-23 (NKJV) states, “Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on. For they do not sleep unless they have done evil; And their sleep is taken away unless they make someone fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is like the shining sun, That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble. My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” Mark and avoid the path of destruction. Instead, travel the path of God’s glorious light. Divine guidance is available for your pursuit and pilgrimage.
Utilize God’s Word as the source of guidance. Utilize God’s Word that reveals purpose for your life. Allow God’s Word to light your pathway.
